In warm summers we must take extra care to ensure our rabbits are cool and comfortable, when the weather starts to warm up make sure that your rabbit’s hutch is situated in a cool shady spot of the garden. You can add a ceramic tile to your pets hutch which provides a cool surface for your rabbit to lie on in the heat of the day. If the weather gets very hot most rabbits benefit from a light spraying of water on their ears to help cool down.
However the main problem posed to rabbits in the summer is the trouble caused by flies. Flies can carry dangerous diseases and lay their eggs in rabbit poo, if a rabbit gets a dirty bottom, flies will lay their eggs in the poo and within hours they can hatch into maggots which burrow their way into the rabbits fur and skin. This is a horrendous condition known as fly strike.
Fly strike can be prevented by ensuring your rabbits are kept in clean hutches to minimize the smell, check your rabbits bottom regularly and keep it clean with baby wipes if necessary. If there are a lot of flies about you can fit fly screen (available from most garden centres) to the front of your hutch to protect your rabbit.
There are also several products available (johnson’s fly strike preventative, rear guard and similar) that can be purchased from vets or pet shops that can be applied to your rabbits to keep flies at bay.
